WORD OF THE DAY

Kompromat-is a Russia term for compromising, discrediting, or incriminating information about a public figure. Derived from "compromising material", it is a staple of " dark PR" used for negative campaigning, extortion, or blackmail to force compliance or destroy political and business opponents.

Nature of Kompromat
Kompromat files often include highly personal, financial, or scandalous detail. They are gathered, leaked, or even fabricated.

How It is Used
Blackmail & Leverage: Rather than seeking direct financial gain, individuals or state actors gather kompromat to force a target to comply with demands or exert hidden influence over their decisions.

Discrediting Rivals: It is a core tactic in "black PR" or smear campaigns. The damaging information may be released to the media to destroy a rival's reputation and destabilize the political process.

Fabricated Evidence: While the material can be entirely factual, it is frequently manipulated, doctored, or completely fabricated to sabotage an opponent.

Derived from the Greek roots auto ("self") and kratos ("power"), it translates literally to "self-rule". In an autocracy, the leader's decisions are not subject to external legal restraints or regular mechanisms of popular control.
